If you’re planning to ship a car across the United States, one of the first questions you probably have is: How long will it take?
The answer depends on the distance, pickup and delivery locations, weather, traffic, and the availability of carriers. At LISCA Transport, we help customers ship vehicles nationwide while keeping the process simple and keeping customers updated along the way.
Average Car Shipping Times
For most long-distance vehicle shipments, transportation can take anywhere from 5 to 12 days once the vehicle has been picked up.
Here is a general estimate:
- 500–1,000 miles: About 2–4 days
- 1,000–1,700 miles: About 3–6 days
- 1,700–2,300 miles: About 5–8 days
- 2,300–2,700 miles: About 6–9 days
- Coast-to-coast shipping: About 7–12 days
These are estimated transit times. Exact delivery dates can change depending on the route and conditions the driver experiences during transportation.
Pickup Time vs. Transit Time
It’s important to understand that pickup time and transit time are different.
Pickup time refers to how long it takes to schedule a carrier and have your vehicle picked up. Transit time begins once your vehicle is actually loaded onto the carrier.
At LISCA Transport, our standard pickup window is generally 1–7 days. Customers who need faster service may also have expedited shipping options available.
What Can Delay a Vehicle Shipment?
Even with careful planning, delays can happen during auto transportation.
Weather is one of the biggest factors. Heavy rain, snow, ice, wildfires, and other severe conditions can slow down a truck or require the driver to take a different route.
Traffic, road closures, mechanical problems, and previous pickup or delivery delays can also affect the schedule.
Because auto transport drivers may be carrying several vehicles at once, a delay at one stop can sometimes affect later deliveries.
Does the Route Matter?
Yes. Popular routes between major cities are generally easier to schedule because more carriers regularly travel those highways.
For example, shipping a vehicle between major areas in California, Texas, Florida, New York, or Massachusetts may have more carrier availability than shipping to or from a small rural town.
If your pickup or delivery location is difficult for a large car carrier to access, you may also need to meet the driver at a nearby parking lot, shopping center, or another safe location.
Open vs. Enclosed Transport
Most customers choose open auto transport because it is typically the most affordable and widely available option.
Enclosed auto transport provides additional protection from weather and road debris and is often chosen for luxury, exotic, classic, or high-value vehicles.
Enclosed carriers are less common than open carriers, so scheduling may sometimes require additional time depending on the route.
Can You Ship a Car Faster?
Yes. If you have a strict pickup deadline, ask about expedited vehicle shipping.
Expedited shipping gives your order greater scheduling priority and can help reduce the amount of time needed to secure a carrier. However, expedited service usually costs more than standard transportation.
Keep in mind that expedited pickup does not necessarily guarantee an exact delivery date. Once the vehicle is on the road, weather, traffic, road conditions, and other unexpected circumstances can still affect transportation time.
How to Prepare for Your Shipment
Before your driver arrives, remove important personal belongings from the vehicle and make sure the car is accessible.
Take photos of the vehicle before pickup and review its condition with the driver. The carrier should document the vehicle’s condition before loading it onto the trailer.
You should also make sure the driver has the correct pickup and delivery contact information.
